DENVER — It’s a giddy time for the U.S. hemp industry.
Farmers are planting more acres. Businesses are selling more products.
And with Congress on the brink of fully legalizing hemp, industry insiders are eagerly anticipating a boom.
But even if the legalization provisions in the 2018 farm bill pass, hemp will remain a tightly regulated crop facing plenty of regulatory and legal challenges.
Amanda Reuther ran into the room where her husband was with their infant daughter, Paeyton, when she heard him yell, “She’s choking!” Paeyton’s arms and legs were twitching in unison, and her eyes rolled back into her head as the skin of her face turned a dull gray color.
That was Paeyton’s first seizure when she was one-year-old, and it was the beginning of a four-year-long odyssey of doctor visits, medications, sudden seizures, hospitalizations and near constant worry and helplessness for their family. This June, Paeyton, who is now six, began taking CBD oil after she had 11 seizures in 10 hours.

The non-intoxicating marijuana extract is being credited with helping treat a host of medical problems — everything from epileptic seizures to anxietyto inflammation to sleeplessness.

Pot is a multi-billion dollar industry — where it’s legal, anyway — but some advocates believe that the future of cannabis is actually a non-euphoric derivative that delivers health benefits without getting you high.
This past weekend, scores of entrepreneurs, researchers and health advocates congregated in Anaheim, Calif. for CBD Expo West, a conference devoted to showcasing the booming business of CBD, shorthand for Cannabidiol. In California, where adult use of marijuana is permitted, CBD has been showing up in a fast-growing array of products, from vaporizers and oils to skin balms and gummy bears. And you don’t need to duck into a licensed dispensary to buy it; you can often find CBD at your local corner store.
Cannabidiol, or CBD, has been increasingly recognized for health benefits that have seemingly countless applications, from addressing mild to severe anxiety or inflammation to treating more serious, chronic diseases. So, where does CBD come from
MIAMI (CBSMiami) – Fourteen years ago, Larry Chester was a bruising defensive lineman for the Miami Dolphins.
He was a 300-pound strongman who knew how to hold his ground.
Today, Chester is a man searching for answers. He says seven seasons in the NFL left him in chronic pain.
“I was eating opioids, in some search of relief and I was not finding it,” Chester tells CBS4’s Jim Berry.
Even worse, Chester says was his depression. For two years after retirement, the former defensive tackle says he became a belligerent shut-in.
“I lashed out on my children unnecessarily, lashed out on my wife, I even lashed out at people at the grocery store,” said Chester.
These days, a significant number of cannabis users aren’t getting stoned – and they’re not trying to. Instead, the products they’re consuming are high in cannabidiol, or CBD, a compound found in marijuana and hemp plants that offers the medical benefits of cannabis without the accompanying high.
CBD is a naturally occurring substance in the cannabis plant that, unlike its fellow cannabinoid, tetrahydrocannabinol – THC – isn’t psychoactive. Put simply, THC is the stuff in cannabis that gets a person stoned. CBD, on the other hand, doesn’t have any psychoactive effect. But according to an increasing number of medical professionals, it does have legitimate medical uses.

CLEVELAND – An alert about a popular remedy used to help with mental and physical ailments: some stores in Northeast Ohio are pulling CBD oil from their shelves following a new warning from the Ohio Board of Pharmacy.
